Getting into Chicago
| Oak Park is very convenient to "The Loop" and downtown Chicago. Take the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) east from Austin or Harlem Ave. and drive till you reach the Loop. Its about 10 miles, or 20 minutes in medium traffic (before 7:30 am, between 9 am and 3 pm, or after 6:30 pm). In heavy traffic, the driving time to downtown on the Ike is between 30 and 40 minutes. | If you are heading to points north -- The Belmont/Halstead area or other locations north of the "River North", the cogniscenti skip the Ike, and will take Ridgeland Avenue to North Avenue, (or keep going on Narraganset to Belmont or Irving Park) then head east into town (about 8 miles). Taking the roads is quickest for example, when going into town for the evening or on weekends. |
